Introduced in 1994, Ducati’s 916 was a technical and aesthetic tour de force that stunned the press and public alike with its gorgeous appearance and groundbreaking performance, winning countless “bike of the year” awards. Now a modern classic that is considered one of the most beautiful motorcycles of all time, the 916 featured a single-sided swing-arm for quicker tire changes and an under-seat exhaust exit for better aerodynamics, among numerous innovative features.

Ducati built various high-performance versions during the model’s production run, but certainly the rarest of these was the 916 SPA, such as the example offered here. Built for AMA Superbike homologation, and sometimes referred to as the 955 SP, only 54 examples were built. The bike featured oversized 96 mm pistons that brought its capacity to 955 cc, and these incredibly rare bikes are some of the most collectible of all modern Ducatis.

The consignor acquired this example in 2016, and in 2017 sent it to specialist RPM Bikes in Northampton, UK, where nearly £10,000 in mechanical and cosmetic work was performed, documented by invoices on file. It has since remained as a static display in the consignor’s collection of rare Ducatis and showed less than 14,500 miles when catalogued. Highly sought-after, beautiful, and historically important, the 916 SPA is a special prize for the astute collector, and this example is worthy of close inspection.
