Description
"The controversially styled Daimler SP250 Dart was introduced at the New York Motor Show in 1959 and had its European debut at the 1959 Earls Court Motor Show; the Dart name was soon dropped after the threat of legal action from Chrysler who had a car of that name within their Dodge division. Thereafter, this new sports car was known as the Daimler SP250. Power was provided by the 2.5 litre, Edward Turner designed, V8 that soon became revered for the smoothness in its power delivery with 140bhp on tap. Independent double wishbone front suspension at the front and half elliptical springs at the rear with a live rear axle kept the car on the road with stopping power supplied by hydraulic disc brakes on all four corners. The coachwork was constructed with glass reinforced plastic providing a tough, strong and lightweight shape that enhanced performance with exciting and non-traditional looks. The 120mph plus capability was recognised by the police and they were soon being used as high-speed chase cars.
This particular example presents beautifully in ivory over a red interior and has been upgraded to full B specification. The B specification offered a vast improvement over the original cars, much improving the chassis flex of earlier cars by adding extra outriggers and extra chassis strengthening. This car has also been fitted with some fantastic upgrades to improve the driving experience, such as rack and pinion steering which vastly improves steering directness and feel. The gearbox has also been fitted with an overdrive, to improve the experience when cruising at motorway speeds. There is also evidence of an engine rebuild by Russ Carpenter and various invoices dating back to the 1980’s and some invoices detailing some restoration work in and around 2010. The car has also been fitted with an aluminium radiator, to aide cooling, and telescopic rear dampers. This is an excellent example which has clearly been cherished by enthusiasts and has been improved tastefully with driving in mind. Our vendor reports the car drives exceedingly well.Interested parties should note that this car is now offered with an MoT test certificate valid until 13th July 2024.
