Description
In 1955, Ford Motor Company formed the Continental Division to debut their opulent, all-new offering as its own exclusive marque. A successor to the glamorous Lincoln Continental of the 1940s, the new Mark II captured the spirit of its predecessor and was largely hand built. It was priced at $10,000 at a time when the average house cost $22,000. Redefining the American luxury car, just over 3,000 were built.
This 1956 Continental Mark II is finished in its as-delivered combination of black over a two-tone red and white leather interior, and was sold new to Robert J. Burst through L&W Motors of Canton, Illinois. Exported from the Midwest to Sweden in 2008, this Continental was restored between 2009 and 2011. New paint was applied to a high standard, and exterior chrome trim was replated. The interior was re-trimmed in supple leather in Continental’s original pattern; the Y-block V-8 and mechanicals received attention as well.
Acquired by the consignor in 2019, the Continental has since been enjoyed on the roads of Southern California and, per receipts on file, received nearly $30,000 of additional mechanical and cosmetic restoration. Displaying less than 62,000 miles, this Mark II is offered with a copy of its sales invoice, rarely seen sales training literature, and receipts. This Continental represents a superb opportunity to acquire an outstanding, restored example of mid-century American opulence and optimism.
