Citroen’s classic flagship from the 1970s, the SM was a result of the French manufacturer’s 1968 take-over of Italian supercar maker Maserati. Innovative and complex, the stylish front wheel drive SM combined Maserati’s engine prowess with Citroen’s chassis technology. Producing 170bhp at 5,500rpm and 170lb/ft at 4,000rpm from its 2,965cc, four camshaft, V6 power plant, the rapid French/Italian hybrid could reach 135mph and 0-60mph in just 9.0 seconds via a five speed manual gearbox. Technical features included self-levelling air suspension with variable ride height, anti-squat and anti-dive geometry, and variable power-assisted steering. Typical touches included the inner pair of the triple self-levelling headlamps swivelling with the steering when on main beam.
