Despite not showcasing any major technical evolution, it can nonetheless claim to be the first production Citroën to have a transverse engine. The first models used adaptations of the DS power unit but soon the competition, not least from Germany, pushed France’s car-makers into something of a horsepower race. The GTi phenomenon, kicked off in 1976 by the Volkswagen Golf GTi, spread into the grande routière class and for the 1977 model year Citroën offered a sporting GTi version of the CX. Disposing of 128bhp in a car that was splendidly comfortable and blessed with excellent roadholding, the CX GTi additionally distinguished itself with a victory in the 1981 Paris-Dakar. By the 1980s the fashion was moving on to turbocharging. Citroën joined battle in 1984 with the CX25 GTi Turbo. With an output of 168bhp, performance was breathtaking, with a top speed of 220km/h (136mph). There was also the memorable advertising campaign of the time, featuring singer Grace Jones.
In 1986 the car was restyled, being given plastic bumper shields in place of the previous slim-line metal blades, and the car presented here is one of these later ‘MkII’ cars. As a CX Turbo 2, it has the intercooler introduced in 1987, a modification that improved fuel consumption, and this particular example also has the optional air conditioning and the very rare on-board computer only offered in 1986 and 1987. Finished in Magnetic Blue with grey velour upholstery, the car currently belongs to a major Citroën collector, who bought it in 2013. Carefully looked after as part of his collection, it is in very good original order and has covered only 97,000km (60,275 miles) from new.
The service record and all associated documentation is in its original wallet and there is a second set of keys. Recently given a full service, at the same time the alloy wheels were restored to as-new condition. The hydropneumatics have also received attention, with replacement of the spheres and some of the hydraulic lines. On the road this fabulous mile-eater of a car is sweet-natured and comfortable – until you ask the turbo to do its stuff! This is a rare opportunity to buy a CX with full service history, no corrosion, and with performance that is still right up to the minute.
This car will be sold during an auction sale organized by AGUTTES Auction House.
