Description
As father of the Corvette Zora Duntov was not happy with the continuously diminished power output of his baby. He therefore decided (even though he already had retired from active business life) in 1975, to solve the problem with the help of a Martin turbocharger, thus reviving his original idea of a turbocharged Corvette from the 70s which was, at the time, declined by the GM management for cost reasons. Together with Bob Schuller’s company ACI, which had been responsible for the monstrous Greenwood Corvettes, the cars were prepared with the small block V8 receiving a Garret AirResearch turbocharger and the coachwork was massively widened. With its huge air inlets and an opulent interior with lots of velours, fake wood and digital instrumentation, 200 examples are rumoured to have been built, but because of a new prize nearly double what a standard Corvette then cost as well as a blatant lack of power (actual performance was always kept secret) only around 86 examples, 49 coupés and 37 convertibles could be sold. The car offered here is number 15 of those exceedingly rare Corvettes. The “TurboVette” was first registered most probably in California in 1982 followed by a registration in the state of New York in April 1991, where, at the end of the year with 15’549 miles showing, it was taken over by an enthusiast and imported into Switzerland. After two further owners in 2003 and 2004, the cabriolet spent several years in the private collection of a coachbuilder before it was taken over by the vendor. The currently around 17’000 miles indicated most probably correspond to the actual mileage. The Duntov is driving impeccably and is in good to very good overall condition. It will be sold with US documentation and Swiss customs duties have been paid.
