Description

Transmission: 2 gears, Automatic
Registration number: PM-78-11

The second Corvette generation, the C2, was an enormous step forward for Chevrolet. Lighter, faster and much better. It was immediately available as a powerful V8, the bodywork having been tested in a wind-tunnel for the first time and with nearly twice the expanse of steel in comparison with the C1 it still weighed less. The C2 Stingray is considered to be the most fetching Corvette of all by many. This Matching Numbers, Split Window, example is no exception.

The C2 ‘Split Window’ we have here is one from the first year of production in 1963. It is by far the most popular version with its Spilt rear window and air vents on the bonnet. At the time the car was often compared to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL and other exclusive sports cars. The 327 CI V8 develops 300 hp meaning this Corvette C2 Sting Ray can still count itself as a pure breed of sports cars. The C2 has characteristic round taillights and flip-up headlights that remained a typical Corvette feature until the arrival of the C5. The interior ambiance reminds one of being in an automotive jukebox with its wonderful array of chrome and aluminium detailed gauges, knobs and handles. The steel gearstick that works the 2-speed automatic transmission is reminiscent of aircraft of that era. This Corvette is in great shape having already benefitted from a professional restoration. The paint and brightwork look stunning. The look continues unabated inside, leading us to the only correct conclusion that this car is fully done up. Just take in the upholstery, headlining and the instrument panel, what a joy it is to step into this time machine and drive away.

The car comes with extensive documentation dating back some 1,000 miles. The last six VIN numbers and the engine block number are the same, confirming this is the original V8 Chevrolet put in back at the factory in 1963. All the other engine numbers are to well documented, leaving no margin of doubt about the car’s authenticity. The almost obligatory NCRS, National Corvette Restorers Society, papers are present indicating the C2’s date of birth on the 19th March 1963, with the first owner collecting his prize from Blanck Chevrolet in Brownsburg, Indiana. Now nearly sixty years later this very stylish Spilt Window is on sale nearly 7000 km further at us in Brummen.
