While the 1958 Corvettes equipped with Rochester mechanical fuel injection made the magazine headlines and victory podiums, there was a second, almost forgotten version of the "Ram-Jet" powered Corvette. Regular Production Order 579 produced one of the unusual Corvette variants that year. While the 290 horsepower RPO 579D Corvettes required manual transmissions and were the basis of race-winners around the country, the kinder, gentler 579 engine was available with Chevrolet's two-speed Powerglide automatic gearbox. Many Corvette buyers wanted a stylish sports car with a modicum of performance, and the RPO 579 option delivered just that. Only 504 Corvettes were ordered with the RPO 579 engine in 1958; just 104 with the $188.30 Powerglide option.

Presented here is one of those uncommon RPO 579 Corvettes with Powerglide, finished in the popular Charcoal acrylic lacquer with Inca Silver coves color scheme, over a Red vinyl interior with matching Daytona weave carpeting, AM radio, seatbelts, and clock. Wide whitewall tires and full "spinner" wheel covers are also featured. Highly collectible, the 1958 Corvette is the first model with quad headlights, and the only year to feature the unique "washboard" louvered hood and deck lid chrome strips.

After spending time in Australia, it joined the collection of exemplary 1953–1967 Corvettes of the late Leonard Nagel in 1985. Mr. Nagel performed a full body-off-frame restoration, documented by the Bloomington Gold certification it received in 2002, scored by five judges to be more than 95 percent of "Typical Factory Production." Furthermore, this Corvette earned three Top Flight awards from the National Corvette Restorers Society using similar criteria, along with their Performance Verification Award ensuring mechanical operational excellence. These awards resulted in the coveted Duntov Mark of Excellence Award being conferred in 2006 at the NCRS National Convention in San Antonio, Texas. Now under the care of the consignor and showing 257 miles since restoration, this fuel-injected Corvette is one of the rarest, most desirable from 1958.
