Founded by Henry Leland and Robert Faulconer, the Cadillac Automobile Company completed its first car in 1902. Six years later, the company launched its four-cylinder Model 30, which offered luxury motoring at a modest price. Built to Leland’s famously exacting standards, the “Thirty” was continuously improved throughout its production run, gaining the revolutionary “electric self-start” and electrically operated headlamps in 1912. That same year, Cadillac launched its enduring “Standard of the World” marketing campaign and, in 1913, set a new sales record with over 15,000 cars delivered.

This 1913 Model 30 Cadillac was transformed, presumably in the 1920s, into the fantastic, one-of-a-kind pickup truck seen today. Featuring an extraordinary, hand-built passenger compartment – complete with eccentrically shaped beveled-glass windows and period instrumentation – and full commercial truck bed, this unique creation has been preserved in time capsule condition. It presents as a fantastically charming piece of automotive Americana from a bygone era.

Painted olive green with red pinstriping, the Cadillac proudly displays the name and address of its former employer, M. Holzmer & Son Decorators – 2052 Howe St., a business evidently based in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Further attesting to its Windy City provenance are a Chicago city commercial tax disc (dated 1928) and AAA Chicago Motor Club plaque affixed to the cowl.

Discovered by well-known Pennsylvania-based collector Tom Heckman, the Cadillac was purchased by Mark Smith in 2005. It has since remained a fixture in his White House Trading Company building, perfectly at home among the ambience of a pre-WWII automobile showroom.

In correspondence on file, Mark Smith remarked, “You have to group a car in the Cadillac’s condition much in the same light as you would a fine original-finish piece of furniture.” Indeed, this Model 30 Custom Pickup is a truly fabulous antique, sure to appeal to any collector with an eye for fine, unrestored American-made objects.
