1953 Buick Skylark Convertible

History: Built because of the mood created from the concept cars of the years when General Motors was promoting with the Motorama – Autorama spectacle. A time when automotive designers were not so hindered by executive committees. Buick General Manager Ivan Wiles wanted to create a unique sporting convertible to showcase GM’s abilities on its 50th anniversary. The Skylark, which was built in 1953 was based on the Roadmaster chassis. It was a largely hand built car with body panels individually stamped and assembled, it had a low cut down windscreen, giving it a sporting appearance. Powered by an overhead valve V8 engine, mated to a dynaflow transmission. It was loaded with options. Air conditioning, radio, and power seats, windows, and convertible top. It has special 40 spoke Kelsey Hayes wire wheels giving it a striking new appearance. The 1953 Skylark was GM’s most expensive and powerful car built. A truly special car for its time. Only 1,690 were built.

Condition: Restored around 2005 in San Diego during the ownership of Ed Quinn to include body and paint, new chrome, upholstery, and many other improvements. It is a very nice correct example. All systems working well, power top, seats, etc. Having spent the past 15 years in Marin County in a nice collection.
