For 1942, Buick introduced bold, new styling throughout their model range, which was heavily influenced by Harvey Earl’s groundbreaking “Y-Job” concept car. For the first time, the front fenders resembled an airfoil in profile and flowed as an integral part of the design, yielding a streamlined, cohesive look incorporating the low hood line and windshield frame. The division’s venerable Dynaflash Fireball 8 engine provided smooth, reliable power. Impressively, Buick would build over 92,000 cars for the 1942 model year before automotive production ceased that February, as the Flint, Michigan factory was repurposed for WWII. More than 30,000 of the 1942 Buicks completed were the uprated Series 50 Super models, but less than 2,500 were convertible coupes, which started at the not inconsiderable price of $1,450.

Quickly distinguishable from the similar models which resumed postwar for the 1946 model year, the 1942’s double-parallel side moldings announce them as the final prewar Buicks. The Series 50 Super Convertible Coupe offered here is finished in a beautiful version of Buick’s Honolulu Blue. The tan cloth interior is trimmed with blue leather and accents the exterior beautifully as do the chrome hubcaps, beauty rings, and whitewall tires. A former AACA award winner, under current ownership, this rare Convertible Coupe received extensive cosmetic refurbishment by the renowned Buick authority and restorer Art Wright of Arizona.

Produced for just a few months, the surviving examples of the 1942 Buicks are even more special today, over 80 years since they left Flint, and this fabulous Super is sure to provide its next caretaker with countless hours of enjoyment, whether on exhibition or any timeless stretch of road.
