The History
In 2007 the BMW in-line six-cylinder leaves the scene in favor of a 4.0-liter, eight-cylinder V with 420 hp at 8,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 3,900 rpm. The engine derives from the V10 of the M5, from which it inherits technological solutions adopted at that time in Formula 1, such as the throttle of each single cylinder electronically managed, a rare technology for a production engine, which, despite the two extra cylinders and the displacement heavier, it weighed 15 kg less than the six-cylinder in the E46.
The E92 was also the first BMW M3 to have an automatic double clutch transmission (optional instead of the 6-speed manual), which allowed it to sprint from 0 to 100 kph in 4.6 seconds (compared to 4.8 of the manual).
Its sporty and streamlined look makes it a unique and somewhat atypical M3, but undoubtedly still fascinating today. On the other hand, how can you not love a sedan with a V8 engine?
