The exact moment in modern history when BMW made a more radical departure from its stylistic and engineering roots is perhaps a point of debate among purists. In the early- to mid-1990s, however, the Bavarian marque was in its heyday, producing cars that irrefutably embodied the classic, original BMW character - naturally aspirated high-revving engines, purposeful styling, analog instrumentation, and an all-round "driver-first" ethos. BMWs were typically available in 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7-series, many of them becoming iconic in their own right. New for 1990, however, was a grand touring coupe that outshone its already impressive predecessor, the 6-series, with substantially greater performance and the price point to match.

This all-new design, the 8-series, was available in 8- and 12-cylinder form, where the V12 was the first such motor mated to a six-speed transmission on a production road car. Technology abounded and there were countless industry firsts including the first electronic "drive by wire" throttle as well as one of BMW's first multi-link rear axles. But while the contemporary economic climate, however, didn't allow for series production of the singular M8 prototype that was built, the legendary professionals at BMW "M" Motorsport did indeed get their hands on the 8 series as well - and from that collaboration was born the 850 CSi. While it had the same V12 as the 850Ci, it was so heavily modified that it received a new designation of S70B56. Displacement was increased along with output to 5.6 liters and 380 horsepower, respectively. The suspension was stiffened, steering sharpened, striking "M" wheels were added, and sportier body modifications were made, along with four exhaust pipes exiting the rear.

The exceptional 850 CSi we have the pleasure of offering here was sold new in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as evidenced by a copy of its original window sticker. Stunningly finished in black over black, the odometer only indicates about 46,000 actual miles, which are believed to be original given the car's exceptional cosmetic condition and assorted historic service receipts in its file. From the exterior finish to the interior upholstery and the unused and complete original toolkit, virtually every part of the car's condition would be commensurate with mileage that is even lower than indicated.

Whereas over 20,000 examples of the 850i and 850Ci were built in its production run, total 850CSi production amounted to merely 1,510 units between 1992 and 1996, of which far fewer were delivered in these desirable colors of black over black. As the "youngtimer" market has truly come into its own, previously underexposed enthusiasts have to come to know what BMW fanatics have known all along...that the discrete "CSi" badging on the rear actually represents the production "M8" that never was. As the saying goes, "if you know, you know..."
