The successful 328 was testament to BMW’s credentials as a maker of advanced, fast, and sporting automobiles during the pre-war period. To underline this, the competition car’s 2-litre, 81 PS engine was subsequently fitted to the 327 to create the stylish Sport Cabriolet, of which only 482 examples were produced between 1937 and 1940.
Since the BMW factory in Munich switched to manufacturing aeroplane engines and was then heavily damaged, 327/28s were built in Eisenach. Each equipped with hydraulic brakes, a sophisticated clutch, synchronised gears, and a 140 km/h top speed, this car was registered on 1 July 1939.
Acquired in 1993 by The Aumann Collection, chassis 74353 benefits from a restoration. It presents beautifully in two-tone dark and light blue complemented by a dark blue folding soft-top, while the interior is trimmed with light grey leather and features ivory switch gear.
Blending high-speed composure with sporting prowess, this 327/28 Sport Cabriolet would make for an ideal long-distance tour and rally entrant.
