Introduced in 1993, the Super Touring formula replaced Group A the world over until its demise at the end of the decade. BMW was a major player, with its E36-generation 3 Series proving dominant in European competition at the hands of Joachim Winkelhock, Johnny Cecotto and Steve Soper. However, due to capacity restrictions, the spotlight fell not on the M3, but the 318i, which was outfitted with 2-litre variant of the E30 M3’s S14 inline-four. The model would become one of the most successful and instantly recognisable touring cars of the period.
Identifiable by its Matter number, “E36A-073”, this example is fitted with an S14 engine mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. It is recorded as being delivered to Team Isert in May 1993. The car did not compete that year, and for the following season Team Isert took delivery of three new chassis to campaign in the Super Tourenwagen Cup. It is likely that the car headed to BMW Japan in 1994, though there is no record of it having competed. More recently, this car has been kept as part of its consigning owner’s museum display. As a result of its time on static display, buyers are encouraged to carry out a full mechanical inspection before returning this car to the track. Buyers should also note that this lot has been catalogued as a race car, and is not offered with road registration papers.
Though its competition history is still to be discovered, this 3 Series is nonetheless a highly specified example of one of BMW’s great touring cars, and could potentially be eligible for a number of historic race series. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mu22.
