Description

Chassis No. BC72LXA

Bentley introduced the latest version of the S3 model in October 1962 during the Paris Motor Show. Among many updates, the most noticeable was the new four-headlight design, which brought the car in line with the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III that had launched earlier in the year. Additionally, the radiator grille was lowered by 1 ½ inches, lowering the hood line, and the front fenders featured a restyle to house separate flashing indicators and smaller over-riders on the front and rear of the bumper. These changes not only improved the car's appearance but with increased engine performance, thanks to a 9.0:1 compression ratio and larger carburetors, enabled a faster grand touring speed of up to 115 miles per hour.

Documentation provided by the Rolls-Royce Foundation shows that the chassis of this 1963 Bentley S3 Continental was "delivered to the coachbuilders" on 12 December 1962, where it received a Flying Spur Saloon body from H.J. Mulliner. The chassis card notes that the car was delivered to the port on 12 March 1963, where it left on the "Sieqestein" for the United States three days later. Once cleared by customs, the car was delivered to its first owner, one S.M. Swenson of Essex Falls, New Jersey, on 14 May 1963 by Peter Zage and Co., Ltd of New York City.

The car is reported to have been restored in the 1980s, with the body being refinished in its current shade of silver and accented with red and blue pinstripes. At the same time, the interior was reupholstered in the royal blue leather still present today. The car has also been upgraded with a trunk-mounted air conditioning system, delivering the chilled air through vents mounted in the rear hat shelf.

The car is believed to have remained in the New York area since new and is now a well-presented example of the S3 Continental in a classic color combination. Bodied by H.J. Mulliner with design number 2011/A, Flying Spur coachwork, this car's left-hand drive specification makes it a truly rare sight, with only three examples ever produced.
