Successor to the R-Type, the Bentley S1 was introduced in 1955 with a whole new chassis; the car's wheelbase had been extended 3" to 123", and the luggage compartment was expanded. The S1 had softer suspension than the R-Type, with electrically controlled rear shock absorbers. Brakes had been improved, and the steering was lighter. This model marked the final integration of Bentley with Rolls-Royce - the standard saloons were now entirely alike, but for grilles and badging. The engine was Rolls' 4887cc F-head six, in its final configuration before the introduction of V8 power in 1959. Manual gearboxes were supplied only to special order. The British Magazine, the Motor reported a top speed of 103mph and 0-60 acceleration of 13.1 seconds from a short-wheelbase S1 in 1957.
First registered on 28th July 1958, this wonderful Bentely S1 found its second home in a matter of months when it was sold to Lt. Col. A. R. Bond in December of the same year. Reported by the vendor to be in very good condition mechanically with work in recent years including a gearbox rebuild and top end overhaul, at which time the core plugs were replaced, the cooling system flushed and the engine generally tidied. The car was also fitted with front seatbelts, new starter motor and solenoid, new fuel pump and electronic ignition. Consequently, the engine runs very well, as these 'big sixes' do when properly maintained and regularly used. The car has benefitted from regular servicing reflected in the accompanying large history file which shows not just receipts but also copies of the original build sheets. The interior is largely original and lightly patinated. The rear seats are original and in good condition whereas the front seats were reconditioned by the previous owner and are prodigiously comfortable. The car was repainted under a previous ownership but it remains in good condition as does the car's gleaming chrome. We believe the Bentley S1 is one of the best-looking models produced by the British motor company, having only had five owners from new and being a matching numbers example, this Bentley is an opportunity not to be missed.
