Description
Gabriel Voisin, a pioneering engineer during aviation’s earliest days, built technically advanced, beautifully designed cars that employed lightweight construction, sleeve-valve engines, and stunning Art Deco-inspired coachwork. An evolution of the company’s C4 model, the more powerful C4S was introduced for 1924 and the example offered here is believed by marque expert Pascal Courteault to be the only one surviving with gorgeous, factory-built Torpédo Tourisme coachwork.
This stunning C4S was restored between 2014 and 2016 with meticulous attention to detail and authenticity. The consignor notes that it was an outstanding basis for restoration, with nearly all its inner-body wood structure intact, factory chalk marks under its seat, and number stampings displayed throughout, photos of which are on file. A French car and Voisin devotee, the consignor did much of the work himself, along with L’Cars Automotive Specialties LLC in Wisconsin. Original materials and techniques were painstakingly researched, and the car’s striking and distinctive ecossaise pattern paintwork recalls period Voisin illustrations and complements its avant-garde technical features, including four-wheel brakes and patented disappearing-top with side curtains. For the interior, proper horsehair was used and hand tacked instead of stapled.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to acquire an open, attractive Avions Voisin that has received the attention that such a technical and aesthetic achievement deserves.
*Please note that this vehicle is titled 1922 and by its engine number.
