The Countryman is one of the most attractive and sought-after versions of the Austin Mini. Launched in 1961, it was aimed at gentlemen-farmers and urbanites who wanted to stand out from the crowd. The uprights are adorned with varnished wood to great effect. Unlike the Morris Traveler, the wood elements on the Mini Countryman are purely decorative and are in fact a nod to American woodies. The wheelbase has been lengthened by 10 cm, while the rear bench seat can now be folded down to provide greater load space. This version was a huge success, with over 200,000 produced by 1969. Subsequently, Mini estate cars lost their wooden cladding, but kept a similar structure to the early models.
