Description
The Austin Gipsy is an off-road vehicle produced by Austin from 1958 to 1968. It was designed as a replacement for the Austin Champ, to compete directly with Rover's Land Rover. Like the Land Rover, it was aimed at both the civilian and military markets.
This particular Gipsy was based in North Wales at a Nuclear base, in 1968 its Austin Gipsys were mothballed as part of Civil Defence preparations for any future unpleasantness brought to our shores courtesy of Soviet intercontinental ballistic nuclear missiles.
The Austin Gipsy’s mission was to spring into action from its underground bunker, like something out of Thunderbirds, and come to the rescue of whoever was still wandering about in the smouldering ruins of A post-apocalyptic U.K.
You won’t be surprised to learn that it was never used in this capacity and that, consequently, it spent most of its 32 years safeguarding the realm by not doing very much at at all.
It’s been looked after by the Home Office from 1965 until 1997 when all the Gipsys were sold off.
Since then it has been meticulously maintained and used sparingly being taken to various shows winning a best at show award in 2013. The mileage is now a mere 11996 miles, making this one of the lowest mileage Gipsys in existence and as close as you can get to a new one!
