Motor racing is never better than when the ‘underdog’ triumphs over the bookies’ favourite. The supreme example of this was ‘Doc’ Shepherd and his amazing Austin A40, which humbled many a mighty Jaguar in classic ‘David and Goliath’ battles during the late 1950s. In 1959, he took to racing the new Austin A40 and finished second in the championship. He then capitalised on his switch to the vastly improved A40 by becoming the BSCC champion a year later for the Don Moore Racing Team.
The car on offer is a ‘project in progress’. Originally built as a spare race shell for his well-known A40 racer by Glynn Swift of the famous Swiftune race engines concern, it was never used and put in dry storage for some 15 years or so. Built from a rust free shell, it had been professionally seam welded and fitted with a full roll cage. A panhard-type rear race suspension set-up had also been fitted before the project was shelved. A re
