Description
"The Audi Quattro is one of the most significant cars of the post-war era. The initial plan was to build just 400 for motorsport homologation, but due to strong demand the Quattro went into full production and the first left hand drive versions were available in the UK in the Spring of 1981, with right hand drive following in the Autumn of 1982. The first cars are easily identifiable by their twin headlamps, six-inch Ronal wheels (seven-inch Fuchs as options) and black boot spoilers. The engine was a turbo charged version of the fuel injected 2144cc five-cylinder engine which originally produced 200bhp and a massive 210 lb of torque. This phenomenal power would take the car to 60mph in 6.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 140 mph. The four-wheel drive transmission’s ability to provide traction in all conditions meant that the car rewrote the rule book in terms of road holding and acceleration.
The example we have here is a 2,226cc ‘MB’ engine example, which our vendor has owned for 24 years and has clearly been very well cared for throughout its life. The car went through a thorough recommissioning process following a stint of around 11 years in storage between 2011 and 2022. The work undertaken included a cambelt change, full service, clutch master cylinder, boot struts and various other small jobs. The fuel pressure regulator was also refurbished around the same time. The car presents in excellent condition throughout, the paint retains a great shine and the interior shows no sign of excessive wear and is commensurate with the low mileage the car has covered. The only modification we are aware of is a stainless steel exhaust, which is quite a common change as the original parts have become harder and harder to source. The exhaust still offers a subtle tone but lets the five-cylinder engine, which these cars are so famous for, sing. This Quattro is supplied with an excellent service history, showing 12 stamps in the service book up to 2002 at 78,000 miles, with a further six service invoices since then. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find well-cared for Quattro Turbo’s without ‘moon mileage’ and this example certainly ticks all the boxes. Supplied with a V5C registration document, MoT test certificate and an excellent history going right back to day one. Consignor Fraser Smith
