When Aston Martin meets Zagato, the result is often pure automotive magic, and the 2003 DB7 Zagato is a prime example of this long-lived collaboration. Drawing inspiration from the legendary DB4GTs of the 1960s, the sleek DB7 Zagato showcased the distinctive design language of Zagato in coupe form, featuring muscular fenders, a large front grille, and a raked windshield. However, due to homologation challenges, the coupe was not offered in the U.S. market. Instead, Zagato crafted a special roadster version specifically for American enthusiasts: the DB AR1.

The DB7 AR1, unveiled at the 2003 Los Angeles Auto Show, was a true roadster in the classic sense, featuring no roof at all-only an emergency tonneau cover to protect the luxurious interior when parked. Its design incorporated Zagato's iconic "double bubble" rear section and featured wider rear fenders, a steeply raked windshield, and a muscular stance, all while maintaining the sleek profile that the Italian design house is known for. Powered by a 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine producing 435 horsepower, the AR1 offered a thrilling open-air driving experience, and it became a highly coveted collector's item, with all 99 units selling out quickly. To circumvent the homologation issues that prevented the DB7 Zagato coupe from entering the U.S. market, Aston Martin used the DB7 Volante chassis for the AR1. This not only solved the regulatory challenge but also ensured that the AR1 could deliver the same exhilarating performance as its coupe sibling.

Representing the 76th of just 99 examples produced, this DB AR1 was special ordered in Ferrari Nero Daytona paint over a light tan leather interior. As a well-equipped model, it boasts color-keyed embroidered floor mats, an aluminum shift knob, a satellite navigation system, power-fold mirrors, unique 18 inch aluminum alloy wheels, black painted brake calipers, a fire extinguisher, and aluminum switches. Additionally, the car has a Becker stereo with a six-disc CD changer. Seeking a more engaging driving experience when new, this car was delivered to its original New Jersey based owner in March 2004 with the sporting six-speed manual transmission. With its original owner, it remained in New Jersey until May 2021, with just over 3,100 miles.

Today, this DB AR1 has covered a handful of miles since it is now offered with just over 3,200 miles at the time of cataloging. It is complete with many original accessories, including its original window sticker, two keys with fobs, two umbrellas, DB AR1 protective seat covers, factory serialized car cover, owner's manuals, service invoices, special DB AR1 coffee table book numbered to this car, a letter to the first owner from Dr. Ulrich Bez, serialized model car, accessories, and paraphernalia. As a result, this car remains a resplendent example today in fabulous condition. With its striking design and limited production, this 2003 Aston Martin DB AR1 remains one of the most memorable and collectible collaborations between Aston Martin and Zagato.
