Introduced by Aston Martin at the very end of DB6 production, the Mk 2 was launched to represent the long-lived model at its ultimate evolution. Some of the changes were mechanical and subtle, including fitment of a larger clutch plate and power-assisted steering as standard equipment. Others were easily noticeable, such as the adoption of wider wheels with standard three-ear knock-offs, necessitating flared wheel arches, and a more modern interior with pleated leather front seats, forecasting the DBS V8 that soon followed.
With its successor looming on the horizon, the DB6 Mk 2 was not in production for long. Especially rare was the Vantage version, which featured an engine with triple-Weber carburettors rather than the usual two; in the highest state of tune producing some 325 horsepower. Only 71 Mk 2s were fitted with the Vantage engine from new, and only a handful of those left the factory left-hand-drive.
Purchased directly from A.M.L. Ltd. (Aston Martin Lagonda) by Mrs Lucy Hartley of Teddington, this DB6 Mk 2 Vantage was prepared for personal export, with a factory guarantee issued on 1 October 1970. Specified with the desirable five-speed manual ZF gearbox and two front seatbelts, the bodywork was coated in Platinum paint, contrasted by Black Connolly leather hide in the cabin with a Grey headlining and Black carpets.
Little is known of the ownership history following Mrs Hartley’s ownership, while this DB6 Mk 2 Vantage has been part of a private collection in Kuwait since the 2000s. The vehicle has remained on static display for a number of years, and chassis 4309/R will require recommissioning prior to road use.
Upon inspection, the car was found to retain its matching-numbers Vantage engine, as verified by the accompanying copy of the Aston Martin build sheet. The DB6 is presented in dark blue metallic paint, with a factory-correct black leather interior. As one of just 71 Vantage DB6 Mk 2s built, this Aston Martin provides a rare and exciting opportunity own one of the final iterations of Carrozzeria Touring’s iconic design.
