Description

ALFA SPIDER SERIE 1 1750 ‘DUETTO’ 118CV 1968 - It was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966 and tested by the press at an event organised in Gardone Riviera. Famous the world over, the Alfa Romeo Spider was the last design personally attributed to Battista Pininfarina in 1966. The bodies were also built by Pininfarina at his factory in Grugliasco, just outside Turin. It had avant-garde styling and excellent aerodynamics with a sloping boat-tail rear (known as the ‘Osso di seppia’ in Italian), a rounded front, a split front bumper that emphasised the low shield-shaped grille and the Alfa Romeo emblem. The long history of this Italian motoring icon is full of curious events including Alfa's attempt to name the car ‘Duetto’, which was the winning suggestion in a written competition, but had to be abandoned just a year after the car's launch because it was already registered to a confectionery company, but even so, ‘Duetto’ is still the nickname by which the Spider model is best known and also ‘Osso di Seppia’.
In January 1968 Alfa Romeo presented the 1750 engine to the press, which replaced the 1600 version. This is a European version, powered by a 1,779cm3 engine with a DOHC double overhead camshaft, 2 Weber twin horizontal carburettors coupled to a 5v manual gearbox delivering 118hp, 4-wheel disc brakes and rear-wheel drive. It is presented in an elegant combination, with a ‘Rosso Italia’ red exterior, and a black interior, seats, upholstery, tonneau and bonnet. It was sold new through the Alfa Romeo dealer in Angola at the time. It came to mainland Portugal after the 25 April Revolution, by its owner Mr Amadeu Inácio in 1976. It underwent a total restoration (with a record of maintenance and restoration invoices) a few years ago and is in magnificent condition. It has an ACP Classic Certificate, valid until 2025. It comes with a User's Manual and an old booklet from the time. The Series 1 is one of the most highly valued, exclusive and rare models of the 4 generations. It is a 1750 model, the most powerful version available at the time, with a production run restricted to around 2,785 cars (European version LHD configuration).
