Description

Chassis No. AR1426501

Engine No. AR00564 01102

Penned by Marcello Gandini for Bertone, who famously created the iconic Miura just one year before, Alfa Romeo launched its "Montreal" concept car to the world at the Expo 67 World's Fair in Montreal. Three years later, Alfa Romeo debuted the Montreal as a production model at the 1970 Geneva Auto Salon. While strikingly similar stylistically to the Expo 67 concept, the production model abandoned the Giulia's four-cylinder for a high-revving quad-cam V8 based on the 2.0-liter Tipo 33 Stradale engine. With a sticker price higher than a Jaguar E-Type or Porsche 911, the striking design and exhilarating performance was not enough to tempt many buyers, with just 3,925 examples produced by 1977. Regardless, the Montreal is a beautiful hand-built Italian sports car worthy of a place in any collection.

This immaculately presented, low-mileage, and well documented Montreal was delivered new to the home market on 31 May 1972, painted in the period-appropriate "Oro Metallizzato" 826 light metallic gold color, very much as it appears today. The second Italian owner took delivery on 7 May 1975, before the third owner acquired the Montreal on 21 April 1977, and then imported the car to his hometown in Lawrence, Massachusetts that fall. In June of 1978 another Massachusetts resident acquired the exotic Alfa Romeo and kept the car for 19 years before selling it in May of 1997 to the previous owner with 58,620 kilometers or approximately 36,425 miles recorded on the odometer. He cherished the rare and desirable Montreal using it just on mild weather days, until passing away about a decade ago, at which point his estate sold the car to the consignor, a Los Angeles-based collector of exceptional Italian sports cars, with 91,766 kilometers (57,021 miles) recorded. A perfectionist, the consignor spared no expense when it came to refurbishing the highly original, well documented Alfa Romeo. Extensive records have been kept of the specialist work performed totaling more than $110,000 carried out between February 2017 and December 2022. Gran Turismo Los Angeles was entrusted with restoring the suspension, alternator, brakes, A/C system and upholstery in "Avana" light beige color. In 2018, a full engine-out service was carried out with a reseal of the all-alloy V8 engine and fitment of a new clutch. In 2021, Mario and Son Classic Cars repainted the car in its as-delivered 'Oro Metallizzato' color, while Gran Turismo Los Angeles carried out a rebuild of the SPICA fuel injection system, as well as steering box and water pump refurbishment and installment of new tires on the clean, era-evoking Campagnolo alloy wheels, of which a 5th is located in the trunk.

This spectacular Montreal has made appearances at various Southern California Concours events and drives and is currently offered with just over 97,000 kilometers or approximately 60,000 miles documented kilometers from new. Complete with a copy of the Certificato Di Origine from Alfa Romeo, owner's manual, jack and tools, the Montreal presents in superb condition throughout, testimony to the consignors aim for perfection in his cars.
