The 1600 Junior Zagato was presented at the Turin Motor Show in November 1972. Unlike its predecessor, the 1300, which was based on a shortened version of the Spider, the 1600 used the 1600 Spider's underframe directly; the 1600 Zagato was slightly longer, had a more sloping roofline and a redesigned rear panel. These changes improved aerodynamics as well as functionality. The 1600 cc engine increased power output from 87 hp to 108 hp, while interior improvements included a wooden metal spoke steering wheel and an integrated horn button.

The interior is relatively spacious, with a flat storage area behind the driver and front passenger seats and ample luggage space, making the car highly practical. The exterior design, unadorned with chrome or badges, has such an edgy appeal that fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent used the Junior Z in his advertising. Ultimately, 1108 Junior Z 1300s and 402 1600s (various theories) were produced.

The Rosso 1600 Junior Z presented here was imported to Japan in 1991. Since then it has passed through the hands of several owners and the current owner has cared for the car for 10 years. Although not concours condition, the car retains original and drives pleasantly, showing that it has been cared for on a daily basis. The original carpeted areas remain, although they have deteriorated over time. The original Rosso body paint has also been partially repaired but remains in very good condition overall. The interior has had the dashboard (due to floating vinyl) reupholstered, the seats have had tears repaired and a custom-made floor mat is included. Body & engine matching number, ideal for anyone looking for a 1600 Jr. Z that retains its original ambience.
