MODEL HISTORY

The Giulia family of cars, or 105 series to an Alfisiti, were launched in June 1962 at Monza in 4-door Saloon (Berlina) guise as the Giulia TI. Other versions of the Berlina joined the TI but it was the Coupés that really put the Giulia models on the map from the Sprint GT, to the GT Veloce, culminating in the formidable and hugely successful Sprint GTA. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, the 105 Series Coupés were groundbreaking in their styling thanks to the beautiful balance of metal and glass.

Available for just two years (1965 & 1966) and with just under 1,000 examples built, the GTC was a 2+2 convertible, based on a Sprint GT but modified by Touring as a cabriolet. Bar a couple of cosmetic changes (Black dashboard instead of Grey and GTC badging) the car was the same as the Coupé albeit with reinforced areas to improve rigidity with out the roof. The engine was the same 1570cc all alloy twin cam unit that was, and is to anyone who has driven a car with one fitted, an absolute masterpiece of an engine. Breathing through twin Weber carbs the little engine put out an impressive 105bhp at 6,000 rpm. This may not sound a lot by today’s standards but when one thinks that the most powerful Ford Cortina at the time was putting out 78bhp, it puts things into perspective. The fine engineering didn’t end with the engine, a 5-speed all synchromesh gearbox and disc brakes all round with servo assistance, meant the Sprint GT was always going to be a great road car.

THIS MOTOR CAR

This Alfa Romeo Giulia GTC for sale at the Classic Motor Hub was first registered in February 1966 and was the 43rd of the 99 built in RHD for the UK.

The first owner, a Mr. Curry from Redditch kept the car until 1982 when the he sold it for the princely sum of £550 to the previous owner. The car at this point nearly 20 years old was, by the new owners standards, in need of some work and a labour of love in the form of a 2 year restoration was carried out, including a colour change from the original Verde Muschio (Dark Green) with Cuoio (Tan) to the current Red with Black. A huge number of invoices going back the late 70’s details all the maintenance and parts ordered over some of Mr. Curry’s ownership and all of the previous owners. Since the restoration the car was used sparingly, according to old MOT’s and invoices in the exhaustive history file, this Alfa Romeo Giulia GTC has covered just 15,000 miles since 1984 when the restoration was completed.

Between 2008 and 2010 the car had another ‘birthday’ in the form of a bare metal respray during which any panels that needed any attention were either repaired or replaced. The engine was stripped and the head tested. Having been rebuilt in 2001 just 5,000 miles before, the head was fine. The bottom end was checked and the decision was taken to hone the bores due to glazing and at the same time, grind the crankshaft and fit new big end and main bearings.

All through the previous ownership the car was meticulously maintained with regular servicing and if additional work was required, it was done and the invoices for said work and parts were all kept in the comprehensive history file. The car was last service in July 2019 by Cloverleaf in Gloucester.
