‘The current Alfa Romeo conceals as beautiful a chassis as ever with four-wheel independent suspension and a six-cylinder twin overhead camshaft un-supercharged engine….‘ – The Autocar, 11/07/1947.

Produced from 1939 and after the war until 1951, the 6C 2500 was the last of the famous six cylinder cars first started with the 1928 6C 1500.

For this reason, the later 6C 2500s, and especially the elegant Villa d’Este model were considered the end of an era for Alfa, and some call them the last of the great Alfas.

The model was built up from the previous 6C 2300 and retained its all-independently sprung suspension. The 2500 was a faster car and was the first to reach 100 mph thanks to its increased engine capacity and an improved fuel feed.

The pre-war cars could be ordered in several chassis lengths and various stated of tunes: Turismo (87 bhp), Sport (95 bhp), SS or Super Sport (105 bhp) and SS Corsa (125 bhp).

The car was powered by an Inline-6 engine that traced its roots back to the prewar competition models.

It was originally deigned by Vittorio Jano and was reengineered by Bruno Treviso to have a 2443cc displacement, improved cylinder head and a 7:1 compression ratio.

The top model was the Super Sport (SS) which had the shortest wheelbase for nimble handling and a triple carburettor engine capable of 105 bhp. Only a select handful of these Super Sports, as little as four, were upgraded to full Corsa specification.

Pininfarina, Touring, Bertone, Vignale, Zagato with many others bodied the 6C 2500, and each gave the car their own style.

The Pininfarina cabriolet has a particularly glamorous design, having a wide bench seat offering room for three occupants, steering column mounted gear lever and winding side windows.

Pinin was the nickname of Battista Farina (1893-1966) who began his career at his brother Giovanni’s Carrozzeria Farina. He visited America in the 1920s, learning much about mass production before founding Carrozzeria Pinin Farina in 1930, thirty years before the company and his name would become Pininfarina. He is revered as one of the world’s great masters of elegant shapes and one of the largest influences on post-war styling.

After the war, Alfa Romeo began producing their own bodies, a move which would eventually put an end to the era of custom coach building. Offered as complete cars, the first few bodies Alfa built were the Sport Berlinetta and Cabriolet.

As a racing car, the 6C 2500 SS made its debut by winning the Tobruk-Tripoli coastal endurance race in 1939, and continued its sporting success after the war from 1946 to 1950 with three 6C 2500 Competizione. Each featured unique aluminum bodies and 145 bhp engines.

In the 12 editions of the Mille Miglia held before World War II, Alfa Romeo won 10 races, including many podium sweeps. In 1929, the race was won by Giuseppe Campari driving the fastest car in the world, an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS.

Total production of the 6C 2500 Super Sport was 458 units, of which 75 were built between 1939-1943 and 383 between 1947-1951. According to the Fabio Morlacchi and Stefano Salvetti books, around 63 Super Sport Pinin Farina cabriolets were manufactured after the war.

With such a pedigree it is not surprising that the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport should attract the attention of filmmakers, director/producer Joseph L Mankiewicz casting one in his 1954 movie, The Barefoot Contessa, in which it was driven by Humphrey Bogart alongside his co-star, Ava Gardner.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

After completion on 25th October 1948 this extremely rare Alfa (1 of 63) was delivered on the 11th of April 1949 to Mr. Edmondo Cornudet of Milan, Italy, who drove the car for the first years of its life.

This specific Alfa is a ‘2nd series’ example and was originally delivered in it’s current specification.

Colorwise the car was carefully chosen in Blue with a Beige interior and matching hood. It is likely the only example existing to have been ordered in this specific colour combination.

A superb color combination for this car which was off-course intended to drive on nice weather days.

In 1958 the Alfa was sold to Mr Fred Puhn, an American from San Diego, California.

Mr. Fred Puhn, had seen a classified advertisement in the San Diego newspaper for several exotic Italian cars. He called immediately and talked to the seller, Mr Bill Brehaut, who was importing and selling used Italian cars from his home. It turned out that Bill Brehaut was one of the two men who started Road & Track magazine!

Mr. Fred Puhn took good care of his car and eventually overhauled the complex hand-built engine.

The Alfa obviously left a deep impression on Fred Puhn, who some 50 years later wrote an article about it for the July 2012 edition of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club’s magazine in the USA!

A service bill from Morena Blvd., San Diego, California dated 15th July 1963 showed a total of 76,214 kilometres recorded at that time.

In 1965 the Alfa Romeo was sold to Mr Lew Skaug, Chula Vista, San Diego, California, who registered it on 10th May ’65.

In June 1970, Mr. Lew Skaug sold the car to Mr Robert Craft Archibald, 4216 Morrell, San Diego, California, CA, who registered it on 31st July of that year.

In 1980 Mr. Robert Archibald sold the Alfa Romeo for $800 to Mr Howard Staniforth, the father of the last owner who kept the car until 2013.

Mr. Staniforth got the car running and drove it a short distance. Subsequently, the car was dismantled and Howard Staniforth commenced some cosmetic refurbishment in his small workshop (Staniforth Electric), although without finishing the work.

On 16th October 2013, the car was sold by Howard Staniforth’s son to broker Fantasy Junction of Emeryville, California, who sold it to another broker, Mr. Francisco Ramos García of Classic Road, Madrid, Spain.

The car arrived in Europe through the port of Alicante, Spain, on 17th July 2014 and was customs cleared.

By the end of 2015 the Alfa had been sold to Mr. Andrea Sivieri from Ferrara, Italy, who made the decision to start a complete restoration in the autumn of 2016.

During the restoration, the car changed ownership and a full restoration commenced in France in March 2019. The entire car was taken apart again, and after more than 5,000 hours of work was finally completed in the spring of 2022. More then 2.400 pictures of the restoration are available!

Most of the original parts were retained during the restoration, including the rare Borrani wheels.

This company did an absolute amazing and indescribable fantastic job with the restoration of the Alfa 6C.

Every single part has been completely overhauled including the body, the suspension, the brakes, electricity, gearbox, really everything and the quality of the restoration can be seen from a very far distance as the car is absolutely amazing.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

As described above, this specific Alfa Romeo 6C 2500SS is in an outstanding / top restored condition and definitely 1 of the nicest 6C’s we have had in our collection.

The body is absolutely stunning, very straight, amazingly nice paint and superb door fittings and the exterior is finished with beautiful restored Borrani wheels.

Not a penny has been spared on this Alfa!

The chrome is superb restored and is in new condition with a beautiful shine.

The ORIGINAL Borrani wheels have been beautifully restored and are correctly finished with the polished aluminum rims.

During the restoration, the windows have been renewed and they are without any scratch or damage. Also the headlamps and lenses are all in exceptional condition with virtually no imperfections.

The car is in our opinion nicer then new exterior wise.

CONDITION INTERIOR

The interior of the Alfa is condition wise the same as the exterior. As new and completely period correct.

The interior has a sort of art-deco style with very impressive gauges, knobs and switches throughout.

To sit in this Alfa and look around is absolutely fantastic because there are so many small details which ask for attention.

The beautiful thin leather steering wheel is also period correct and amazingly restored.

The seats, carpet, doorcards and soft top are all absolutely amazing condition wise.

It really has to be seen personally as it is difficult to describe in words our enthusiasm about this car.

ENGINE BAY/UNDERNEATH

The engine bay and underpart of the Alfa are in a exceptional nice and correct condition. The engine bay as well as the underpart present very fresh and it is very clear that this car has been restored for an enormous amount of money.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

Many times when a car is so nice restored, it is driving horrible but in this case the car is amongst a superb look, also driving extremely well.

The Alfa starts immediately after pushing the button and runs very nicely. Off-course normal after an entire engine rebuilt but we have other experiences.

The steering is very accurate and the car is responding immediately on the gas pedal.

This is a car which can be used for everything, for participating in the Mille Miglia or to one of the most famous international Concours d’Elegance as Villa d’Este, Chantilly, Pebble beach.

She is extremely rare because of the small amount of cars which have been produced by Alfa but more unique is that only around 20 examples are still know to be existing.

The car has a known and documented history from 1948 until today, including more than 50 original document pages, letters to Alfa Romeo in Italy, bills, photographs, all of which contributes to making this car unique.
