Its factory devastated by wartime bombing, Alfa Romeo did not resume car production until 1947, the pre-war 2500C serving the Milan marque in good stead until 1952.

The firm’s first all-new offering of the post-war period arrived in 1950.

Designed by Dr. Orazio Satta Puliga and intended for volume production, the 1900 was the first Alfa to employ unitary construction and – in keeping with the company’s sporting heritage – was powered by a twin-overhead-camshaft engine.

Launched in 1951, the short-wheelbase 1900C Sprint featured bodywork by Pinin Farina (cabriolet) and Touring (coupé), both models utilizing the 100bhp engine of the 1900TI saloon.

In June 1954 the engine was enlarged to 1,975cc and the model re-designated as the ‘Super Sprint’.

From 1956 a new 3-window body was offered. Using their patented Superleggera construction technique, Touring introduced a new version of their prior 1900 coachwork for the Super Sprint, accommodating the shorter chassis with one window per side rather than the outgoing coupe’s two-window configuration.

The new Touring design was known as the Tipo 4, or three-window coupe and it eliminated the prior car’s rear-fender bulges in favor of straight, streamlined haunches.

Fewer than 600 examples of the three-window coupe were built through 1958.

It was the foundation from which Pininfarina penned their famous Giulietta Spider design, essentially the forefather of the beloved Alfa that remained in production until the early 1990s.

The 1900 in all its guises shone in competitions of all kinds, such as the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio, and remains one of the most successful cars produced by the Italian manufacturer.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

According to the historic records of Alfa Romeo, the assembly of chassis number 104** was completed on March 28, 1957.

It was first retailed in March 1958 to Auto Koenig in Munich.

It is expected that the Alfa went already in the early 60’s towards the United States.

The car was owned during the 70’s by a Mr. P. Magnussen who sold the car at the end of the 70’s via the magazine Hemmings. New owners in the US were Mr. Peter Wessel and Stephen Block.

In 1997 the Alfa was traded in as part exchange on a car by the restoration company Nino Epifani. Epifani kept the car for some years and sold it to the large collector Scott Gauthier.
Scott Gauthier is owner of Jewelry by Gauthier, an award-winning jewelry designer, he restores and races classic automobiles and even rallies his products at his annual Gauthier Classic.

According to some researches Mr. Gauthier kept the car in his workshop for about 15 years.
Mr. Gauthier sold the Alfa in 2013 to Mr. Nigel Shannon who brought the car to the UK. This gentlemen owned the car very shortly and sold the car in 2014

In 2014, the new owner became Mr. Matthias Hinz, from Lisbon, Portugal, the former head of the newspaper Metro in Portugal.

A passionate collector and a fervent restoration enthusiast, he set about a four-year frame off restoration at Scuderia Azzura, well known for performing high-quality restorations of Italian classics 60s of early 70s to absolute mint condition.

He is one of the three founders of this restoration company together with the other two German owners. Transcending national borders, their passion brought them together and they devote themselves to the immaculate restoration of classic cars.

The company is based in Cologne, Germany and the cars shine in new splendor in the captive garage, located on the coast of Portugal, where specialists perform a detailed restoration.

Concerning this specific Alfa. The Alfa is extremely impressive restored. The car is completely taken apart till the frame. Impressive pictures of the full restoration process are available.

All mechanical components were properly disassembled by hand down to the smallest detail, processed and repaired/restored true to the original.

The engine, gearbox, drive train etc. have been totally rebuilt.

The Alfa was completed to concours standards in 2017 and is stunningly finished in Grigio with the roof in a darker color grey which is called Grigio Marina.
The interior of the Alfa is in a beautiful dark blue.

In 2018 won the prize as best restored car at the Techno Classica in Essen. Can you imagine how many restored cars are available at this show and how special it is that the car won the first price.

Since the restoration the Alfa has been scarcely used on nice weather days. The condition is therefore as it was finished from restoration yesterday.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

This Alfa is as described above extremely impressive and on a very high level restored. Therefore the exterior of the Alfa is in an absolute unique condition.
The elegant coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring is highlighted by a stunning grey paintwork. The paint has a spectacular and very deep shine.

During the restoration the aluminium body was carefully removed from the lightweight steel sub-structure. Every single part of the structure as well as the body was inspected and restored when needed.

When the body was reunited with the structure all separate parts such as the grille, the bumpers and the handles were fitted to gain the perfect fit.
When all separate parts were perfectly fitted they were taken from the car and re-chromed on the highest level.

After the full body was resprayed the car was built up again.

A meticulous attention was paid to the accuracy of the panel fit, especially to equal the door, bonnet and boot gaps.

Pictures of the restoration show the extremely high attention to detail.

Since the restoration the car has been scarcely used on nice weather days. Therefore the Alfa is in a beautiful / fresh from restoration condition.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The car is in the condition of a mint car but the driving is as perfect as from a just prepared holiday/rally car. The Alfa handles very easy and drives very comfortable.

This specific example is a car which gives immediately an invitation to be driven.
It’s a relative simple car to drive. Easy to handle but seriously sportive to drive.

Ensure successful competition of events both in terms of driving and looking good while doing it!

For some years now, we drive the Mille Miglia in a 1928 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750. We already knew from the books that Alfa had always been synonymous with state of art technology and we were completely convinced after our 2020 and 2021 Mille Miglia experience.

These very beautiful Alfa’s have recently been discovered in a major way by knowledgeable and sophisticated collectors.

The combination of sure, fast, agile performance, a small quantity artisan build, and timeless beauty and that is eligible for various driving events including the Mille Miglia have made the Alfa 1900 CSS a very sought-after car and this is a very rare and highly desirable example.
