Description
DESCRIPTION
Starting with the Hydra Glide of 1949 and coinciding with the arrival of the overhead-valve Panhead motor, the largest, most expensive and best equipped bikes to wear the Harley-Davidson badge have been part of the large-frame FL family. Updated in 1958, the FL benefited from an all-new frame (nicknamed the “Duo Glide”) but an even more important advance took place for the 1965 model, when the Electra Glide appeared featuring 12-volt system and an electric starter. The new 74-cid Shovelhead engine was announced in 1966, replacing the elderly Panhead unit with more power and improved seals thanks to 'Power Pac' alloy heads. Power was up to 60 hp and noise levels reduced, while the new Tillotson carburettor ensured smoother running. The Electra Glide sprouted wings in 1969, the ‘batwing’ fairings creating a signature look that survived for decades. Harley added a front disc brake in 1971 and upped the V-twin’s capacity to 80-inches (optional from 1978 onwards with standardised in 1981), along with belt drive and a new five-speed gearbox in 1980. The FLHC of 1979 came loaded with extra equipment for touring, including a frame-mounted saddle, full fairing, windshield, saddle bags, crash bars, luggage rack and running boards. Harley added the Ultra Classic version of the Electra Glide to the range in 1988, adding a load of extras for the 1993 Anniversary Model including cruise control and a CB radio plus unique badging. A classic American tourer cruiser with luxury features unheard of on most bikes, the Electra Glide Ultra Classic is just about the most comfortable thing on two wheels.
