RM Auctions sells ‘McQueen 911’ for $1.375m and sets new world record for a Mercedes-Benz sold at auction

1970 Porsche 911S ex-Steve McQueen, from the film 'Le Mans' - Sold for $1,375,000

Early published results from RM Auctions include the news that the celebrated King of Cool's 1970 Porsche 911S was sold for a staggering $1.375m.

The elephant-grey 911 (looking rather unprepossessing in the auction car lot, pre-event, it has to be said) was not only a genuinely ‘ex-McQueen’ car, it also featured in the opening sequence of the film ‘Le Mans’.

Bidding on the car accelerated with an exhilarating vigour worthy of the marque and, while most anticipated it reaching the magic one million dollars, few thought it would achieve the total it did.

1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster - Sold for $9,680,000.

Elsewhere in the 19-20 August Monterey sale – which we will review in full once official results are published – a magnificent 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster set a new world record for a Mercedes-Benz at auction, selling for $9,680,000.

It was one of 12 cars exceeding $1 million on the Saturday night of RM’s 2011 sale. Others included a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione ($5,280,000), a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza ($2,530,000), a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster ($4,620,000) and a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Coupé, for $3,080,000.
