Our highlights from Silverstone Auctions’ Race Retro sale

On Saturday, Silverstone Auctions will once again take residence at the Race Retro motorsport fair in Stoneleigh Park and present a catalogue of classic and competition cars that is studded with quality. These are our favourite lots…

Silverstone Auctions’ 100-lot Race Retro Classic & Competition Car Sale is always a treasure trove of fascinating road and racing cars, but this year there are some truly exceptional bits and pieces. Take the ultra-rare 1992 Lancia Hyena Zagato (est. £150,000–170,000), for example, the ninth of just 24 built, and the exquisite single-owner 1990 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary resplendent in Arancio (£250,000–285,000). The shade of the latter was matched exactly to the colour of its sole owner’s early Countach LP400.

Elsewhere, there are historic racing cars to suit every skill and budget ahead of the forthcoming season. We can’t underestimate the significance of the 1960 Lotus 19 that was raced by such legends as Stirling Moss, Innes Ireland and Jim Clark (£375,000–450,000), although the most beautiful car in the sale must surely be the 1950 Jaguar XK120, a proper factory racer with period competition history (£400,000–500,000). You can see our 10 favourites from the Silverstone Auctions sale below or, alternatively, browse the entire catalogue in the Classic Driver Market
