Based on the Countryman’s platform and almost identical in its external dimensions, the Paceman’s ‘prominent horizontal lines and dynamic curved surfaces’ are aimed at buyers wanting a sportier, more design-conscious MINI. The coupé-style, ‘stretched’ side profile accommodates long doors, while – as per the MINI Coupé – the blacked-out pillars create the impression of a ‘floating' roof.

Also in the sporty vein is the lowered suspension; and, if you’re looking not just for dynamic looks but also for 0-62mph acceleration in as little as 7.5 seconds, the MINI Cooper S version’s 1.6-litre engine has been tuned to deliver 184bhp (with an even more performance-orientated, John Cooper Works Paceman in the pipeline). There’s also a 122bhp version of the same petrol engine, plus two diesel models. All come with a six-speed manual gearbox, or the optional six-speed automatic, while MINI's ALL4 four-wheel drive system is an option on all but the entry-level petrol-engined model.

When the all-new Paceman arrives in showrooms next spring, it will be the seventh member of the MINI family, selling alongside the Hatch, Clubman, Convertible, Countryman, Coupé and Roadster. It will go sale in the UK from 16 March 2013, with OTR prices starting at £18,970.
