Headline figures boast a weight loss of 125kg, 530bhp (or 556bhp if you opt for the AMG Performance package), and 0-62mph in 4.3 (or 4.2) seconds. Oh, and a 30 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency, too.
That massive weight reduction comes as a result of the super-light, all-aluminium bodyshell, while – if you choose the 556bhp version of the 5.5-litre biturbo V8, which Mercedes claims has “more power than any other competitor in this segment” – you not only get the 4.2-seconds-to-62mph sprint time, you also see the electronically limited top speed lifted from 155mph to 186mph. And in case fuel consumption is uppermost in your mind as you explore the higher reaches of its potential velocity, the office Combined consumption of both versions of the car comes in at 28.5mpg.
Looks-wise, the SL 63 AMG “displays the hallmark styling elements of a superior high-performance car from Affalterbach”. The AMG DNA is evident in the front apron with its large air ducts, the LED daytime running lights and a lower cross strut in silver chrome. There’s also a new AMG radiator grille with a silver-chrome double louvre and, at the rear, the familiar AMG spoiler lip, chromed twin tailpipes and diffuser-style rear apron.
The enhanced AMG sports suspension with Active Body Control (ABC), a high-performance compound brake system and the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission add to the package.
The new Mercedes SL 63 AMG is due for full launch in late summer. Prices have not yet been confirmed.
