The coolest kid in the playground drives a Maserati Birdcage

Forget a Raleigh Chopper – the coolest kid at school roars around the playground in one of the most famous 1960s sports cars of them all, the Maserati Birdcage…

A marvel in miniature

This wonderfully detailed Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage children’s car really is almost as beautiful as the real thing. Built entirely by hand, its got a glass-fibre body, a tubular steel chassis, disc brakes, wire wheels shod with Michelin rubber, and even a tiny Maserati key, with which to fire the four-stroke 110cc motor. Our favourite feature, though, is the flawlessly welded exhaust pipe. It’s certainly not cheap, but with such a high level of craftsmanship, it’s bound to prove a safe investment (just like the full-size Birdcage!). If you really want to transmit the motorsport ‘fever’ to your youngster, you best start clearing a space in the garage.
