5 collector cars to put in your garage this week

While one car in this week’s shortlist had every member of the CD team staring wide-eyed at their screens and glumly at their bank balances, each of these choices from the Classic Driver Market offers something special, whether it be unparalleled French cool or jaw-dropping performance…

Le freak, c’est chic!

This low-riding legend 1973 Citroen SM is a vision in baby blue, showing the space-age lines of Maserati-engined oddity far better than the commonly seen silver, grey, and gold. The once ugly kid has now bloomed into a true Continental conversation starter, sure to delight and confuse in equal measure, and as the pictures show, looks other worldly on the move.

Millennial muscle

The start of Aston’s now finely finessed thug-meets-gentleman design language, the swollen hips of this 2007 Aston Martin Vanquish S haven't aged a day. Ordered in the appropriately British-sounding colour combination of Ghillies Green with Obsidian and Parliament Green hide, this example has covered just 8,800 miles from new and is ready for plenty more journeys, breaking hearts and snapping necks in equal measure.

Viva Las Vegas

The proud recipient of one of perhaps the best taillight designs ever, the combination of beefy V8 power and exquisite styling on this 1957 Facel Vega FV3 is a sight to behold. The view of the open road through the curved glass, sun glinting off the delicate instruments encased in the gorgeous dash, is the stuff of dreams, setting the stage for a big entrance at the type of glamorous soirée only a Facel Vega owner would attend.

Outside the box

For the connoisseur who leads a full life yet refuses to compromise on the automotive front, the AMG wagon has been a go-to choice for decades. This 1995 Mercedes-Benz E36 AMG harks back to the beautifully boxy days at Mercedes, and in full-fat AMG form, this W124 model is a perfect Q-car for those who have nothing to prove. Expect smiles for miles, excitable rear wheels, and subtle nods of appreciation from those who know.

Holy grail

People obsess over specifications when it comes to hypercars, bemoaning the fool who didn’t specify the x-thousands-of-euro carbon-wheel centre option or crucial lightweight floor mats, but in the case of this 2016 Ferrari LaFerrari, the options ticked on that no-doubt extensive order form truly make a special car incredible. You can keep your Rosso Corsa, we’ll take this Rosso Rubino any day…
