Top selling car at Bonhams Monaco sale in 2006 was this 1935 Maserati 4CS-1100/1500 at Euro 643,000. An ex-Mille Miglia car, it proved once again that history and provenance is all, as did Euro 467,000 for the 1963 Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso Competizione that had seen in-period action on the 1965 Targa Florio.

The Maserati was just one of 23 lots included in the sale from the German Rosso Bianco Collection. The sorting out of cars following the Collection’s recent sale had resulted in some being surplus to requirements. All but one (the 1937 Delahaye 135M Coupé) sold pretty well on estimate although one has to remember the car’s condition as museum exhibits (albeit well-maintained) rather than regularly run collectors’ motor cars. As a result most cars were slightly off market value as can be proved with the 1963 Maserati 3500 Vignale Spyder selling for Euro 85,100 and the 1964 Ferrari Lusso Berlinetta for Euro 225,000.

Bonhams fared slightly less well with the other collection, from Portuguese enthusiast Vitor Ribeiro, with only three cars selling, and many others withdrawn. A pity because they catalogued well and appeared nice examples, reasonably estimated. That apart, the ‘blue-chip’ cars elsewhere in the auction went well.


Of particular mention must be the various Italian GTs the values of which have been rising ever-upward. Cars such as the ‘Rosso Bianco’ 1970 Ferrari 365GTB/4 'Daytona' Berlinetta, Euro 148,000, the 1963 Ferrari 250GTE, Euro 82,800, the 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400S Berlinetta, Euro 236,000 and the fabulous 1956 Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Alloy at Euro 357,000.

Once again Ferrari 275 GTB prices took another notch higher with the 1965 275GTB/6C going for Euro 426,300. Although a steel-bodied car, it was a ’65 (important for events) and also a desirable 6-carb machine, albeit RHD. Very nice indeed. Strangely neither Lancia Stratos sold, nor did the Aston Martins, although such is the allure of the Mille Miglia retrospective that the slightly oddball 1955 Moretti 750S MM Bialbero Spyder Gran Sport went for Euro 214,000.

1969 Lamborghini Miura P400S Berlinetta Sold for Euro 236,000

And finally the Euro 52,900 achieved for the 1968 Shelby GT-350 proves the theory that these cars are better bought in Europe - and sold on the other side of the pond.
