Bonhams Historic Ferrari Motor Cars at Gstaad 17th December 2005

1964 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Aerodinamico Est.SFR 500.000 - 600.000

For their final motor car auction of 2005, Bonhams will present 27 Ferraris at one of the world’s ritziest venues, Gstaad in Switzerland. Collectors can choose from various models of the marque from the 1950s onwards, many of them having famous owners in the past. Owners such as the French GP driver Didier Pironi, whose 308 GTBi comes from his widow, and is the car in which he frequently diced with Gilles Villeneuve on their way to all the European Grands Prix

But first of all the headlining car on this page, the Ferrari 400 Superamerica. Classic Driver readers will be familiar with the usual descriptions of these car, ‘Fit for a King’ etc, however at a time when nearly all Ferrari’s gradually increasing production went to the world’s super rich, there were some clients for whom a ‘regular’ 250 GT was neither exclusive nor powerful enough. The answer was the Superfast and Superamerica series cars of which just 48 examples of the latter were built from 1961 to 1964. The model for sale was originally supplied to a Sig. Maggiore in Florence, and has since seen both US and European ownership. The 3rd from last 400 Superamerica built, and a more commodious Series II, it’s been the subject of a comprehensive restoration in 2002 and is in its original Grigio Argento/Red leather colour scheme.

1968 Ferrari 275GTB/4 NART Spyder (conversion) Est.SFR 1.000.000 - 1.100.000

1965 Ferrari 275GTB 6C Berlinetta Est. SFR 480.000 - 540.000

Top seller may well come from either the 1958 Ferrari 250GT LWB Tour de France at SFR 1.800.000 - 2.200.000, or the 1968 Ferrari 275GTB 275/4 NART Spyder (conversion) SFR 1.000.000 - 1.100.000, although the rare RHD 1965 Ferrari 275GTB 6C Berlinetta (SFR 480.000 - 540.000) would be a nice car in which to participate in some events next year. 275s have been the car of the last couple of years, US house Gooding & Co. selling the ‘Steve McQueen’ genuine NART Spyder for $US 3,960,000 at Monterey this August. It makes the 6C (for six carburettors) car look reasonable, although RHD may restrict its worldwide appeal.

The sale features a pair each of Ferrari’s blistering 80s/90s supercars, the F40 and 288 GTO, as well as one of the very rare F40LM racers. Both 288s are estimated on market average, and one has the distinction of being a genuine one-owner car, while the other is owned by McLaren Grand Prix car designer (and car enthusiast, and classic racer of note) Adrian Newey. The F40s, 1990 catalyst at SFR 330.000 - 380.000 and 1989 non-catalyst with plexi windows at SFR 300.000 - 350.000, appear clean cars, neither of which have seen the race track. The F40LM in the sale was ordered by the creator of Asterix, Uderzo (a lifelong Ferrari enthusiast), and is one of just 17 factory cars built for racing against the McLaren F1s of the period.

2002 Ferrari 550 Maranello Barchetta (one owner, 4,400km, hard top) Est. SFR 220.000 - 260.000

1969 Ferrari 365GTC Est. SFR 100.000 - 130.000

Bonhams report considerable interest in the 1969 Ferrari 365GTC, SFR 100.000 - 130.000, an attractive example in what is now a very fashionable colour, while the 2002 Ferrari 550 Maranello Barchetta is unique in that it is the only example of the model finished in Rosso Dino, a brighter, sharper red. It's estimated at SFR 220.000 - 260.000.

In addition to all of the above there is a selection of cars for everyone’s taste (and pocket) from the 1952 Ferrari 225 Vignale Berlinetta (Coppa Intereuropa winner) at SFR 400.000 - 550.000, to the rather nice ‘Marrone’ 1984 Ferrari 400i, SFR 30.000 - 40.000, via the ex-Didier Pironi 1982 Ferrari 308GTBi (SFR 40.000 - 50.000) and bang up to date, a 2004 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, at SFR 200.000 - 230.000. With just 250 kms ‘on the clock’, this car is offered with full manufacturer’s warranty starting in December 2005, and is ‘tax free’ if remaining in Switzerland.

At a discount of almost 50% on new, who says you can’t find a bargain nowadays?
