1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Prototype achieves $16.39m – a new world record for a car sold at auction

1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa - Sold for $16,390,000.

American auction house Gooding & Company tore up the record book last Saturday when it sold the prototype of the much-valued Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa series for $16.39m.

The curvaceous race car with its blue/white stripe has become the world’s most expensive car sold at auction. With bidding starting at $10m, it then proceeded briskly to the final hammer price – a fittingly dramatic twist in the story of an amazing car.

Other $1m+ sales on Saturday, 20 August were:

1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California $3,355,000
1963 Shelby Cobra 289 Factory Team Car $2,585,000
1953 Ferrari 375 Vignale Coupé $2,200,000
1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS $1,210,000
1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider $1,025,000
1956 Ferrari 275 GTB $1,001,000
