Based on the well-known and rugged mechanicals of the evergreen Jeep, the Jeepster became available as a convertible. Planned during the war by Brook Stevens, who in the 1960s created the Excalibur, the Jeepster was probably the first SUV, if you take the Sports Utility Vehicle concept literally. Designed to appeal to the upcoming middle class who wanted some style as well as ruggedness, the Jeepster was the first and until now one of the very few open four-seater 4x4s. Offered with both petrol and Diesel engines, the most attractively styled Jeepster entered production as the civil alternative to the Jeep in 1948 and was only available in its first guise as a soft top.
