Beschreibung

Launched in 1959 by the Rootes Group with a modest 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine, the Sunbeam Alpine was designed to compete with the likes of other British roadsters at the time. After mild success in racing, thanks in part to Formula 1 champion Jack Brabham, Rootes looked to pack more power under the hood. The result was a partnership with Carroll Shelby, in which they agreed to shoehorn the 164 hp, 260 cid Ford V-8 into the compact, lightweight frame of the Alpine – and the Tiger Mk I was born.

This series 1 Tiger is a longtime California car, and has been lovingly preserved and updated over the course of its lifetime. Finished in its original Wedgewood Blue, it is one of the first Tigers to feature the elegant, burl-wood walnut dash. Early on, the Tiger’s stock 260 cid V-8 was replaced with an authentic 1965 Ford 289 Hi-Po V-8, and its stout driveline includes the factory original gearbox and differential, according to its certificate of authenticity on file.

Fulfilling a lifelong dream for the current owner, the Sunbeam has received a recent restoration by Tiger specialist Chris Richards. Desirable upgrades include a rebuilt gearbox and front suspension, LAT-optioned hood and intake manifold, as well as ceramic-coated headers. It also features a new, period-correct interior with details such as an original Smiths 3030/01 clock and modernized Motorola 808T radio. Meticulously restored and lovingly maintained, this formidable Mk I Tiger, producing over 300 hp, was built for spirited driving and stands ready to thrill its next owner.
