The Bentley MkVI was quite an advanced car when it was introduced in 1946, just after the second world war. It was the first Bentley available with an all-steel body from the factory. Of course, the chassis was still supplied to independant coachbuilders as well, but the total share of coachbuilt MkVI's was only 20% of total production. The engine was the strong and powerful 4 1/4 Litre straight six.
There has always been an interest to convert the Bentley MkVI (and also its successor, the R-Type) into sporty two seaters, and these were called the Specials. A lot of small coachbuilders made a creation on the MkVI chassis, and for that reason there are many different body styles, often limited to one or two examples.
This particular Special has a beautifully handmade body. The rear compartment is finished in black vinyl, just like on the famous Speed Six Bentleys from the thirties. Inside, there are very nice bucket seats finished in tan leather. Beside the passenger seat, there is a sign that says "Vanden Plas", which may be the inspiration for the coachbuilder of this specific example. Engine and gearbox are in as new condition. The engine sound is fantastic, and because of the lightweight body it is quite a fast car as well. This car has been used in several long distance rallies, and comes with a FIVA pass. It is perfectly maintained and is still in immaculate condition.
This is the kind of car for the historic rally enthusiast who wants something different. It is reliable, fast, beautifully made and above all, it is a real Bentley.
