Frank Spring came to Hudson from Walter M. Murphy Company in Pasadena where he had been production manager. In addition to its many custom bodies for Duesenbergs and other high quality luxury automobiles, Murphy also had the Hudson/Essex agency. Spring took the title of Engineering Designer and oversaw all of Hudson s body designs and innovative engineering features during the Thirties, including the first one-piece pressed steel roof panel and the Electric Hand , a finger-operated vacuum powered electro-mechanical gearshift mechanism. During World War II Hudson built aircraft wing and fuselage sections, experience that may have influenced Spring s concept for a radically-different postwar Hudson. Introduced in late 1947, the 1948 Hudsons were like nothing else on the market. The full envelope bodies were unique, not only in appearance but also in construction as Hudson turned to unit construction of bodies in a single assembly. It dropped on a wide perimeter frame that passed outside the rear wheels and the foot wells were dropped within the perimeter frame. Designed under Spring s leadership by Arthur Kibinger, Robert Andrews, Arnold Yonkers, Bill Kirby and Arthur Michel, the 1948 Hudsons were a sensation in auto shows, showrooms and on the road where their low center of gravity made the the best handling American automobiles available. This 1949 Hudson Commodore Eight Convertible Brougham is powered by Hudson s 128 horsepower 254 cubic inch L-head eight with a 3-speed manual transmission. The car is equipped with a remotely operated spotlight, power top, whitewall tires, hubcaps and trim rings and has been thoroughly cosmetically restored in two tone Maroon and Red over Maroon upholstery and a Black cloth top and top boot with red piping. Paint, chrome and interior are uniformly very good with minor exceptions from age and use. It is a very attractive driver, and one of only 596 Commodore Eight Convertible Broughams believed to have been built, it is a rare example of Hudson s quality, performance and driving qualities.
