Austin-Healeys evolved dramatically during the marque s brief life. It s hard to accept today that from the debut of the first four-cylinder BN1 in 1952 to production of the last grand touring BJ8 covered a span of only seventeen years. But that s all it took. The final Big Healey, the 1964-1968 3000 Mark III Phase 2, brought it all to a fabulous conclusion with a 150hp 3-liter twin carburetor six, luxurious appointments including comfortable seats and a burl wood dashboard, and a rugged, competent chassis with enhanced ground clearance. This is a very early BJ8 Phase 2 with all the suspension and mechanical advances but employing the early Mark III s single parking/turn signal front lights. Comfortably appointed with rollup windows, a snug top and generous seats, it has been meticulously and completely restored in black with red leather upholstery, red interior trim and a black leatherette top and includes overdrive, a Moto-Lita wood rim steering wheel, chrome wire wheels and radial blackwall tires, including a chrome wire spare wheel and blackwall tire. Its all-black exterior presentation is ominous but complementary to the BJ8 s historic body lines and unusual in Healey circles. The bodywork is dead straight, done right from top to bottom and the restoration is complete, accurate and high point with just a few miles since it was completed. Paint and chrome are high point and the engine is nearly like new, a car that can be driven with pride and satisfaction, then shown with confidence at the end of a day s run. The culmination Austin-Healey s history, this BJ8 Phase 2 incorporates the vision of Donald Healey and the whole Healey team in a rare early version of the final series of the marque.
