Chrysler s attempt to introduce new Plymouth and DeSoto designs for the 1949 model year were frustrated by a strike that affected its tooling vendors. Formal introduction of the new DeSotos was delayed until March 1949 with all-new bodywork on a chassis lengthened by four inches. Despite narrower, more streamlined bodies better design and packaging increased usable interior space. A new cylinder head increased the 237 cubic inch inline six s power from 109 to 112. All DeSoto Customs were equipped with Fluid Drive. It was an important evolution for DeSoto. This 1949 DeSoto Custom Convertible is one of just 3,385 built and has received a superb body-on restoration with gorgeous Glade Green paint and chrome and a sharp dark green vinyl, beige cloth interior with a tan cloth top and dark green top boot cover. It is equipped with a (standard) power top, Fluid Drive, radio, heater, full wheel covers and wide whitewall tires. The engine compartment has been thoroughly and completely restored including the firewall and is carefully detailed. The chassis and underbody have received a thorough cosmetic restoration. It is an amazing example of meticulous attention to detail that gets better upon closer inspection. It is almost certainly the finest example of its kind extant, or of any 1949 DeSoto for that matter, an audacious demonstration of devotion and passion.
