Jaguar has always offered automobiles with a unique combination of style, design, performance and price so when Great Britain began its push in the days after World War II to generate US$ revenue to begin to settle its wartime debts Jaguar quickly recognized the potential of the US market. Its first response was to adapt its prewar 3 1/2 liter six-cylinder all steel body line to lefthand drive and set up a series of master dealers across the US including Max Hoffman in New York and Chuck Hornburg in Los Angeles. When Lyons joined Hornburg in a festive opening of the Sunset Boulevard showroom the first order, for a Jaguar 3 1/2 liter drophead coupe like this, was placed by Clark Gable. That kind of appeal and endorsement set Jaguar Cars on the road to success in the U.S. This 1948 Jaguar Mark IV 3.5 Liter Drophead Coupe is one of just 376 Mark IVs built for export. It was originally sold in California and has received a meticulous restoration in black with burgundy body sides. The interior is trimmed in beautiful red leather with matching carpets, intricately grained and finished wood trim and a black cloth three-position soft top with red piping matching the interior. Fitted with chrome wire wheels, whitewall tires, a pair of Lucas teardrop fog lights that match the free-standing tri-bar headlights and trafficators, it also has an owner s manual and a full tray of tools in the trunk. Everything about the Jaguar was done right when it was restored in 2000. The quality of the workmanship and materials, as well as its subsequent care, is apparent in the way the restoration has held up. The Jaguar Mark IV is one of very few postwar built automobiles to be recognized by the Classic Car Club of America as a Full Classic (tm) and this one will proudly represent both the marque and its owner in any CCCA event.
