Introduced in 1916, the Packard Twin Six was the world s first production V-12 automobile engine. It owed no small debt to Packard Chief Engineer Jesse Vincent s work on the WWI Liberty V-12 aircraft engine and set new standards for quiet, subtle operation and smooth power delivery from negligible rpm to a top speed that reach 70mph even with heavy closed bodies. The 60 degree vee-angle Twin Six was steadily refined, getting new cylinder blocks with detachable heads in 1917, but by 1922 its expense weighed on Packard s sales during the postwar recession and it was discontinued after 1923. The Twin Six s reputation is justly deserved and these were by most collectors standards, the best American automobiles of the period. This 1922 Packard 3-35 Twin Six Roadster is one of just 1,944 Twin Sixes built in 1922 and has been fully and meticulously restored to very high standards a few years ago. Built on a 135 inch wheelbase, the long, low hood accentuates the tightly packed roadster body and long rear deck with rumble seat. Despite its size it is not flamboyant. Trim, except for the radiator shell, MotoMeter, step plates and door handles, is painted black. The light yellow wood spoke wheels have wide whitewall tires, but the lock rings are painted black. Even the headlight enclosures with their integrated parking lights are black. The body is painted maroon with black fenders, running boards, chassis and neat black highlights around the doors and rear cowl edges. The interior is upholstered in black leather, protected by a black leatherette top. The steering wheel has a massive wood rim and the instruments are fully restored and finely detailed. The engine compartment, with Packard s Fuelizer vaporization assist system, is clean, detailed and meticulously organized. This is a pretty, impressive and imposing automobile with a careful, complete restoration that has been well maintained. It is particularly attractive. While most roadsters of this era chug down the street, this Packard Twin Six Roadster glides in impressive silence and smoothness.
