Today it may be difficult to accept the Thirties fascination with 2/4 place rumble seat coachwork on vast multi-cylinder chassis yet they were not only popular then but remain among the most sought of all collectors cars three quarters of a century later. Nothing better illustrates the concept than this exquisite 1936 Packard Twelve 2/4-Place Coupe. Two people don t need a car with 175 brake horsepower and a 139 1/4 wheelbase, but it s comforting both that it s available and that someone thought enough of him or her self to buy one at a cost of some $3,820 plus the tariff for the dual covered sidemounts, Trippe driving lights, trunk rack, ride control, heater, radio and who knows what else. Intimate accommodations for the driver and a single favored passenger were expandable (in good weather, and it s probably always good weather when you could buy a magnificent automobile like this) to include two friends who could carry on a conversation, or pass the flask, through the rollup rear window. Restored to like new condition, it shows scant age and use and is fresh, beautiful, exclusive, sporting and imposing.
