EDITORIAL

The Goodwood Festival never fails to enthral and entrance. What I like about it is that seemingly disparate entities are brought together so successfully, in a way seldom found outside an event held on Lord March's West Sussex estate.

What do a 1920s railway coach, the 1976 and 1984 Olympic 400–metre hurdles champion Edwin Moses and an RAF Typhoon Eurofighter have in common?

In the space of 30 minutes on Sunday afternoon, each one grabbed my attention — perhaps none more so than the dazzling air display by the quite deafening military jet.

Moses was quite the coolest man at the Festival, and the royal railway carriage was a typical Goodwood exhibit: slightly off–the–wall, no doubt a logistical nightmare to install and proving surprisingly popular with spectators.

The words 'static display' hardly do it justice. But, like the rapid 1970 Le Mans–winning Porsche 917, the Greenwood Corvette, the Eagle–Weslake F1 car and the Carrera PanAmericana Mercedes 300SL, it was another vital piece in that bumper jigsaw that is the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

And a personal favourite? It would have to be the 1973 Matra–Simca 670 long–tailed Le Mans car — as 'un–static' an entry as you can get.

Postscript: When we say "seldom found outside...", it's ironic that this weekend is the start of one of THE events of 2012, the Le Mans Classic. And don't forget Pebble Beach week towards the end of next month. It's fun this time of year.
